Wahroonga, NSW 2076

Wahroonga derives its name from an Aboriginal word meaning our home.

With the opening of the North Shore railway in 1890, the suburb became a fashionable destination for the well-to-do to build their out-of-town residences. Today Wahroonga remains an aspirational address that instantly conjures up images of stately homes, sprawling blocks, beautiful gardens and tree-lined streets. Needless to say it's highly desired by families who adore its prestigious properties and neighbourly atmosphere.

Salubrious estates with grand period residences sit side-by-side with more contemporary additions to the architectural landscape. A number of historic homes are dotted around the suburb, the most famous being Harry Seidler's landmark Rose Seidler House, built for his parents in 1950. Surrounded by bushland with panoramic views of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, it's one of the finest examples of mid 20th-century modern architecture in Australia. Autumn is when Wahroonga really shows off in all its glory, when the many deciduous trees proudly lining its avenues turn into a spectacle of colour.

Wahroonga's main shopping hub is focused around the train station precinct. Here you'll find an IGA supermarket along with a number of multicultural restaurants and cafes, including The Butcher's Block and Cedarwood. Locals also flock to Café Patina which overlooks Wahroonga Park, with its gorgeous manicured gardens, playground and rotunda. The park also plays host to the popular annual Twilight Concert series. Additionally, East Wahroonga has its own small local shopping village, meaning you never have to travel too far for your essentials wherever you live in the suburb.

There is no shortage of recreational attractions on offer in and around Wahroonga, from parks and playgrounds to sporting amenities. Enjoy the multi-purpose facilities of The Glade, with its turf wicket, cricket nets, tennis courts, half-court basketball and soccer field, or head to the North Marona Avenue entrance and follow the Marona Avenue Trail along to the idyllic Lane Cove Valley Walk (part of the Great North Walk) along the Lane Cove River.

Wahroonga is home to the Sydney Adventist Hospital, an acute-care private hospital with more than 700 beds, making it the largest private and largest not-for-profit hospital in NSW.

One of Wahroonga's premier drawcards for families is most definitely its abundance of highly regarded schools, both public and private. Non-Government schools include Knox Grammar, Knox Grammar Preparatory School, Wahroonga Preparatory School, Abbotsleigh, Wahroonga Adventist School, St Leo's Catholic College and Prouille Catholic Primary School, along with St Edmund's School and St Lucy's School, both for students with disabilities.

Government schools include Wahroonga Public School (known at The Bush School) and Waitara Public School, along with many schools in the surrounding suburbs. There is also a wide selection of pre-schools available.

Wahroonga is well serviced by public transport, with a train ride to Wynyard Station in the CBD taking less than 40 minutes. Buses take you to both Chatswood and the city along with the surrounding suburbs. Located at the beginning of the F3 Freeway to Newcastle, Wahroonga also enjoys easy access to the Central Coast.
